The Hardest Working Ad in Fresno

Water bottles, fruit, and paint balls are just a short list of things that hit Jimmy Fernandez on a daily basis. Jimmy’s official title is the Human Billboard, but others might call him by something different such as Sign Guy, Sign Dude, or Banner Waiver.

Jimmy Fernandez has been a human billboard for the past 3 years, and through hard work, and reputation now has work with 8 different companies around Fresno.

“I try to give my energy to everybody,” says Jimmy as he prepares for his 3 hour shift.

When asked what drives him to be such a great ad specialist, he simply answered, “I love what I do.”

On most days people yell obscenities at him or throw objects at him. But now and then, people have brought him clothes, homemade food, asked for his autograph, and he even gets a phone number or two on occasion from female followers.

On this day Jimmy was working for Slicks Bar on Shaw and Brawley. Jimmy’s routine is best explained like watching a energetic mascot routine.

“Everybody likes him and he is so full of energy,” says Anthony Galindo, owner of Slicks Bar. He also tells us that Jimmy works no matter what the weather is like. Rain, Wind, or in the middle of a hot summer day, Jimmy is out there no matter what.

We must have watched Jimmy for 15 minutes and he never did the same move twice, impressive since he’s out there for hours at a time. He runs up and down the sides of the corner he is on, going where the light has just turned green to get in front of the most cars.

So next time you see an ad specialist please remember what my mother used to tell me, "If you can’t throw anything nice, don't throw anything at all!"
