Tower District resident Toby Byers has tapped into his own pocket and artistic talent to develop what he’s always wanted to produce. STEEL (which will soon be more recognizable by the abbreviated EE)is the name of his clothing line, which he has created all of the original art for.

            “Steel stands for Self Tapped Expression Eternal Life,” Byers explained to me while I sat with him in his Tower District home/studio. Byer’s art expresses how he feels and he silk-screens his selected art work on a very limited amount of shirts, sweaters, bags, bathing suits, and sweat pants. “I’m in the beginning phase of designing a whole new line of stuff,” Byers said. “I have a lot of new art to put onto a lot more clothes, and I hope to have it coming out really soon.”

            What makes his clothing so special is just that; the ART. It is all individualized. Only a certain amount of prints of each piece of art are made, which will “make the owner of the piece of art feel personalized and give peace of mind to know not everyone else is running the streets with the same stuff,” Byers said. “The clothing represents a feeling and a point of view and not everyone shares that same perspective.””

            With future hopes and aspirations to open his own men’s shop downtown, which he has explained to be something with a masculine yet functional and fun environment, Byers is out on his way to becoming an artist to keep eyes and ears open for in the near future.
